Why Great Landscape Design Is More Than Beautiful Views
Some of my favorite moments as a landscape designer happen long after a project is finished.
They aren't during the design presentation or the final walkthrough. They're the photos clients send months later. Friends gathered around the fire on a cool evening. A quiet cup of coffee beneath the pergola. Dinner lingering just a little longer because no one is ready to head inside.
Those moments remind me that the best landscapes aren't remembered because of the materials we chose. They're remembered because of the life that happens within them.
Every great landscape has one thing in common.
It gives people a place to gather.
More Than a Beautiful Backyard
When people imagine their dream backyard, it's easy to picture the features first.
A beautiful patio.
An outdoor kitchen.
A fire pit.
A bubbling fountain.
Comfortable seating beneath a pergola.
Those features all have their place, but they're not what makes a landscape memorable.
What makes a space memorable is what happens there.
It's where conversations continue long after dinner is over.
Where neighbors stop by and stay a little longer than expected.
Where grandchildren explore the garden.
Where the first cup of coffee somehow tastes better outside.
The landscape simply provides the setting.
The memories are what give it meaning.
Start With the Experience
One of the first questions I ask clients has nothing to do with plants or pavers.
Instead, I ask:
"How do you want to spend time outside?"
The answer is different for everyone.
Some people picture lively evenings with family and friends gathered around a dining table.
Others imagine ending the day beside a fire with a favorite drink.
Some simply want a peaceful place to read a book, listen to the sound of a fountain, or enjoy the quiet before the day begins.
Those answers shape every design decision that follows.
Because when you begin with the experience instead of the features, the landscape becomes much more personal.
A pergola isn't just shade.
A fountain isn't simply a water feature.
A fire pit isn't just another amenity.
Each becomes part of creating an experience that draws people outside.
The Details That Invite You to Stay
The outdoor spaces people return to again and again usually have something in common.
They feel comfortable.
Shade arrives where it's needed most.
Lighting creates warmth instead of simply illuminating a walkway.
Comfortable seating encourages conversation.
The sound of moving water softens the surrounding noise.
Plantings create privacy without making a space feel enclosed.
Natural materials age beautifully and become even more inviting over time.
None of these details demand attention on their own.
Together, they create an atmosphere that makes people want to stay.
That's the difference between a beautiful backyard and a meaningful outdoor living space.
Here's Something I've Noticed...
After years of walking properties with homeowners, I've noticed something interesting.
People rarely tell me they want a place to gather.
Instead, they ask for a larger patio.
An outdoor kitchen.
A fire pit.
More seating.
Those are all wonderful features, but they're usually answers to a different question.
Once we begin talking about how they want to live outdoors, the priorities often shift.
They realize what they're really looking for isn't another feature.
It's a place where family naturally comes together.
Where conversations happen without planning them.
Where guests feel comfortable lingering.
Where everyday moments become lasting memories.
That's where thoughtful landscape design begins.

Before choosing materials, selecting plants, or deciding where the patio should go, take a moment to ask yourself a different question.
Where do I want people to naturally gather?
Sometimes it's a shaded patio with two comfortable chairs.
Sometimes it's a dining table where everyone fits.
Sometimes it's a quiet corner with a fountain and a morning cup of coffee.
Whatever it looks like, start with the experience you want to create.
The design will follow.

Featured Kanvas Project
This project was designed to be a place the homeowners could enjoy every day. The goal wasn't to fill the backyard with as many features as possible. It was to create a space that felt like a retreat, somewhere they could relax, entertain, and enjoy without leaving home.
One of my favorite parts of this project is how personal it became. The fountain was moved from their previous home, so it was important that it found a special place in this new landscape. We also incorporated a meaningful sculpture and designed the surrounding garden to make it feel like it had always belonged there.
Those personal touches are what make a landscape memorable. They tell your story and make the space feel uniquely yours. Combined with the pergola, fire feature, and comfortable gathering spaces, this backyard became more than a beautiful landscape. It became a place to slow down, spend time together, and simply enjoy being home.
